H.H. The Dalai Lama talk on "Creating Positive Change"

- 4/29/2007 by T

First of all, there is nothing absolute positive or negative. However, whatever brings you peace and happiness is positive. Whatever makes you angry, uneasy, anxious is negative. Mental status is more important than the physical being or materials you own in regard of happiness. One can be homeless but content or can be a millionaire with endless worries. Having said that, I still need this hat to block the light :) (Dalai Lama's eyes are sensitive to the strong light of the auditorium) Okay, I am done with the talk :) (Laugh...) How (to creating positive change)?

  • When I meet people, I try to deliver two messages: human value, and religious harmony.
  • I recall some Buddhist teaching from the 8th century. If you want to control the thousands of things outside of you, the infinite amount of things outside of you, how is it possible? However if you go back to yourself, the inner you, it is all easy.
  • Like temperature, hot and cold don't coexist. Anger and joy don't coexist. The way to heal anger/anxiety/fear/etc is to cultivate its counter emotion.
  • We as humans are special because of mothers. We were born from mothers, not from flowers. Even more, we were nurtured by mother's milk. That's why humans have more affections than other animals. Everyone here in the auditorium, I ask you to give maximum affection to your children, spend maximum time with them. Given love, they can do the same to others. In the future, humans may be born from machines. I don't know. Perhaps they will make less trouble, haha :)
  • Compassion is the best medicine to everything. For example, there was one time, I was really sick in Bodhgaya. I saw some poor and sick people on the street. One of them were really really ill. On my way to the hospital, I thought of them, especially the really ill one. My pain was not as acute anymore. Have compassion to your enemy too. They were not born to be your enemies. They might become your friends later. Have compassion for them. I have compassion for China, everybody. Confront your enemy with compassion, with determination, with confidence.
  • Now, let's talk about the second aspect: the religious harmony. How do we treat your own religion and other religions? Faith and Respect. Have faith in your own religion and have respect to others. Is there THE best religion? No. There is only the best region for You. There is no single best religion in the world. All the religions in the world serve people. They want to improve the quality of human's lives. They want to reduce our fear, give us peace, and so on. In a higher level, they are all the same. My Christian brothers and sisters call me a good Christians :)
  • Treating Muslims as enemies just because of a few bad Muslims in 911 is wrong! There were bad Christians, bad Tibetan Buddhists...

Q and A:

  • Q: How do we solve the gap between the poor and the rich, from a group of young people working on community projects?
A: The rich has to help in education/infrastructure and the poor has to work hard! The initiatives come from inside. One has to believe he/she is no worse than others. He/she has to be confident and work hard. Integrating the rich and the poor together in such a project let the rich realize the reality and let the poor have a sense of community. This is good. Go do more research!
  • Q: As a new mom, how can I teach a baby/child to be kind and compassionate?
A: You are asking a wrong person. I am a monk. Haha! As I said before, give your maximum affection and compassion.
  • Q: As an ordinary person, what can we do to help world peace?
A: Pray to heaven, haha! (Dalai Lama praying and looking upward) Problem's solved! Haha. Little by little, seek peace within yourself, then within your family, then your community, then bigger and bigger.
